Since the ability of VFS to remove nutrients and suspended solids in this closely controlled experiment was so highly variable, the performance of VFS in actual use is probably much less than expected although no performance criteria have been established.
In the upcoming months in Maryland, special attention is expected to be directed toward vegetated filter strips as a best management practice due to the recently passed Chesapeake Bay Critical Area Protection Act. One requirement resulting from the legislation is that, under certain conditions, VFS must be provided around the borders of some agricultural operations.

Considerable effort has been placed on developing analytical procedures to describe VFS performance in retaining sediment.
